ROBERT BRACEWELL II (JR.)
1650-1714
Robert Bracewell, Jr. was the elder son of Robert Bracewell, Parson of L.P. The reference, 17th Century Isle of Wight county, VA, by Boddie says, James Bagnall escheats (forfeited) a parcel of land 300 acres which did formerly belong to Robert Bracewell, Parson of L.P. and by him given to his oldest son, Robert, and 2 acres adjacent to the mill, which mill and 2 acres of land Mr. Robert Bracewell gave to his son, Richard, now in the possession of William West. (No date) There is from the same book, page 569, a record where Robert Braswell, son of Robert, clerk, sells 300 acres where James Bagnall lives to said James Bagnall, dated March 31, 1674.
The wife of Robert, II (Jr.) was Susanna Burgess, daughter of John and Mary Burgess. (Southside Virginia Families, Boddie, p. 193) On March 27, 1696, Robert Bracewell appointed his wife Susanna to be his attorney in Isle of Wight. (17th Century Isle of Wight by Boddie, p. 627.) This was probably power of attorney and may have been due to his health.
Robert, Jr.'s date of death is based upon the date Susanna's will was written. Her will was dated Oct. 22, 1714. There is no record of a will or date of death for Robert, Jr. but he must have died prior to Susanna making her will.
Susanna's will was not read until June 26, 1732 indicating that she lived for many years after the death of Robert, Jr. An abstract of Susanna's will (Wills and Adm. Isle of Wight, Book 2, 1640-1800, p. 61.) list sons: Richard, (Richard II from here on), William, James, daughter Ann, granddaughter Elizabeth, and grandson John Riggs. (probably son of Ann who may have married a Riggs.)
Susanna left to her daughter Ann, granddaughter Elizabeth Bracewell, and grandson John Riggs small bequests and the home plantation to son Richard, executor, and to William the old plantation house with 40 acres of land. The remainder of the estate went to her eldest son, James Bracewell. (Will book 3, p. 304.) Viola Vick Braswell says in the Lineage of Jacob Thomas Braswell that this same James Bracewell later moved to Edgecombe County in North Carolina and became the direct ancestor of the late James Craig Braswell, well-known citizen of Rocky Mount, N.C.
On November 5, 1692, Roger Towle named in his will the three youngest children of Susanna Bracewell, i.e., Richard, William, and Elizabeth, each to receive one-third escheat of land at the age of seventeen years. (Book 2, p. 323.) This would indicate that the children of Robert and Susanna Bracewell were born before 1692. This will does, however, create one complication. Daughter Ann is not mentioned. She may have been the Elizabeth listed in the will, or she may have been born later than 1692. Elizabeth is not listed in Susanna's will, so if she is not the same person as Ann, she may have died before Susanna's will was probated.
