Dear Joe:

Many thanks for your letter. Sorry you haven't heard from Dale & Laurens C'nty historians, but I'm not surprised. Many people have no interest in history nor in family history. Sometimes I'm sure some of my family and friends think I'm a fanatic. But I do enjoy the research and keep plugging ahead (more accurately - backward) and just shrug it off when I fail to get a response to my inquiry.

Wallace Davis mentions Doris Jackson Davis in his foreword. I presumed she was his wife. He also gives full credit to the Bedias Civic Club.

I am writing to R. G. Bracewell today to see if I can buy a copy. Many thanks for the info and for his address.

Astonished that Blair was in Freeport. Book, printed in 1930, lists him as school supt. in Trinity, Tex.

Man, the trouble I went to to get Blair's book. Finally from Univ. of Arizona library.

Would be delighted to have a copy of the Gladys Hall letter. Please send it.

Yes, I often think of moving back to Texas, but I'm licensed to practice only in Calif. And I couldn't pass another State Board Examination if my life depended on it. Our two girls are 12 and 10, so I will have to work another 8 years at least, but I would like to come home eventually. Wish I could afford to visit. Uncles & Aunts getting old now, many in their eighties, and I would like very much to see them once more, and to get acquainted with the children of my cousins. I've been away since 1941.

Haven't had much time recently to work on census records at Federal Archives, but hope to get back to there soon. For a long stretch I set aside Friday afternoons to spend on census microfilms. That place has become crowded since "Roots" was televised. In 1976 I had it pretty much to myself. Looking back over notes from census:

Dale Co. Ala, 1850, p. 167

#21 William Bracewell, 48, M Farmer, Ga

Elizabeth " 49, F "

William J. " 28, M Farmer "

Mary Ann " 20, F "

Benjamin " 18, M Farmer "

Joseph M. " 16, M "

Elizabeth " 14, F "

Sarah Ann 12, F "

Rhoda Ann 8, M "

Nancy A. E. 4, F "

Note: Indicates move from Laurens Co., Ga, to Dale Co, Ala, between 1845 & 1850.

Laurens Co, Ga, 1860, p. 30 shows a Fredrick Bracewell, 78, living with family of Neuson B. Bracewell, 34. I figure he may be a son of Richard B. II. (Fredrick, that is) (born 1782)

Laurens Co, Ga, 1840 census shows:

Seaborn A. Bracewell & wife, 1 boy, 1 girl

David Bracewell, 40-50, 4 boys, 3 girls 20 slaves

Sampson Bracewell, 30-40, 3 boys, 2 girls 38 slaves

Richard Bracewell, 40-50, 3 boys, 2 girls

Elizabeth Bracewell, 40-50, 3 girls

Earlier census spells name "Braswell".

Best to you,

(signed) Chas
