Mrs. J. S. Bracewell passed away in Houston, Texas on August 4, 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband, attorney J. S. Bracewell, on November 30, 1965. Mr. Bracewell, founder of Bracewell & Patterson, had been President of the Houston Bar Association and Chairman of the Houston Port Authority. Born on April 20, 1896 in Roans Prairie, Grimes County, Texas, Mrs. Bracewell moved in 1916 with her husband to Harrisburg in Houston's East End, where they lived until 1965. Together they founded the Broadway Plan of Church Finance, which was used to build over 6000 churches in the United States and Canada. During the years following World War II, they traveled most of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, counseling with churches concerning their building programs. Mr. and Mrs. Bracewell were charter members of the Broadway Baptist Church, Houston, Texas, for which the Plan was named. At the time of her death, Mrs. Bracewell was a member of Oakland Baptist Church in Roans Prairie, Texas, where she lived from 1965 until 1985. Mrs. Bracewell was a charter member of the Laura Clark Reading Club and was a member of the Past Presidents Club of the City Federation of Women's Clubs.


She is survived by: Her sons and daughters-in-law, Searcy and Elizabeth Bracewell, and Fentress and Muriel Bracewell; by her sister, Alma Blount Rea; by her grandchildren and their husbands and wives, Lyn Bracewell Phillips and husband, Judge Thomas R. Phillips, Joseph S. Bracewell, III and wife, Peggy Donley Bracewell; Elizabeth Bracewell Machac and husband, David Joseph Machac, and Bradley F. Bracewell, Jr. and wife, Elaine Griffin Bracewell; by her great-grandchildren, Eric, Clare, Thomas, Melissa, Stephanie, Patrick, Bradley, Charles and Laynie; by two nieces and a nephew; and by faithful friends, Gloria and Leroy Edwards of Roans Prairie, Texas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 7 at 10:30 a.m., Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Ray V. Mayfield, Jr., Pastor of Broadway Baptist Church officiating. Graveside service will follow. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Bracewell's grandchildren and their husbands and wives. family will receive friends at the Forest Park Funeral Chapel from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6.
