Brazell surname in England phonebook PDF Print E-mail
Written by CW Brazell

From early 1972 until late 1979 our family lived in northeastern England. The Petroleum company that my husband, Douglass Lee Brazell, was employed by had a joint enterprise company with Imperial Chemical Industries of England. Doug's assignment was to represent our company. When we returned home we brought the then current local telephone directory with us.

That directory covers a large area of Northeastern England. The Tees River forms a boundary between County Durham and County Yorkshire. The area along the River is called Teesside. The population there is heavy and it is industrial. The telephone directory covers that and more. It covers a part of southern County Durham and a rather large area in what is known as the North Riding of Yorkshire.

Below I have copied all of the Bra___names which are a part of our study. In this area there were no Braswell names listed.

At this point let me interject some politics. At that time the telephone company in Great Britain was under the government auspices. It functioned as part of the Post Office Department. You know those charming red telephone booths that were on almost every corner of their country? Well, the reason for that was that many, many of the homes did not have a telephone. Any time the government runs something, it is not done in the best way. Many people could not afford a telephone. Just before we left in 1979, Conservative Maggie Thatcher became Prime Minister after a long while of Labor government. One of the things she did was oversee the telephone company being acquired by private enterprise. Ten years later when I visited in England many of those red booths had been sold as collectors items and many more people had a telephone of their own.

I tell that because there may have been others of the family name who were not listed because they had no phone. Incidentally, the date of issue of the directory was 1977. When we left in 1979, it was still the latest book. We are the 5th listing below. We had leased a charming old farm house for about 4 years, but we had moved to a different location in 1978, and we'd not had a new directory since that time.
